During the 2nd Annual Conference on Haitian Diaspora Engagement & Innovation on November 1 – 2, 2013 at Columbia University, I had the opportunity to introduce the audience to my organization. In our effort to share the activities of organizations in Haiti and its diaspora, It is my pleasure to inform you about IEEE Haiti.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. Three Haitian Engineers from The City College of New York have founded IEEE Haiti in order to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM Fields) in our homeland. So far, IEEE Haiti has completed three (3) major conferences at Faculté Des Sciences. IEEE Haiti has also launched the FDS Innovation Competition which seeks to challenge the university’s young minds to develop innovative ideas that will benefit their institution.

Our plans for the future include:

  • Internship programs for IEEE Haiti members at the major companies in the STEM Fields.
  • High school and university outreach programs to promote STEM Fields and the awareness of IEEE Haiti.
  • Events such as conferences, seminars, and workshops where students and professionals share knowledge.
  • Challenging competitions to engage university students to work together, build together, and develop their minds.

We believe that the STEM Fields are the foundation for Haiti’s global competitiveness. We seek to promote humanitarian engineering and to engage our university students and professionals for a more sustainable Haiti. We greatly appreciate your support in helping us promote the STEM Fields and raise awareness of IEEE Haiti. We have launched a campaign on indiegogo.com in the effort to obtain fund for our inaugural event that is planned for April 14-16, 2014 at: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ieee-haiti-fund

IEEE Haiti and its founders have been featured on news websites such as:

As a member of the diaspora, I believe that we do not have to forget our country once we have left it. We do not have to wait until we have everything we need before we start to give back. Our future starts now. I thank you for your time in reading this. I look forward to hearing from you. Help us spread the word!

Best regards,

Richard Sam
