As professionals in today’s competitive job market it is important to make continued investments in the advancement of our careers. Many of us may already realize there’s work to do beyond obtaining education and training but many are not sure about how to take the next step. Sometimes we get busy with living life and neglect to nurture our careers. Here are three quick tips to take your career to the next level in 2016.

  1. Cultivate relationships to expand your network within and outside your professional industry. You never know when you may need to make a career shift so it’s important to develop and cultivate a diverse network. The beginning of the year is a great time to follow-up with contacts to ensure that you stay connected.
  2. Stay abreast with political and industry trends that may impact your career trajectory. Is there new technology that you need to learn to remain competitive? What are some pending laws that will make it harder for your industry to generate revenue? It’s important to pay attention to trends so that you make career decisions that are proactive instead of reactive.
  3. Explore opportunities to serve your community with your talents. As the saying goes, “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care.” This year find the time to share your talents with an organization in need.

As a member of the National Alliance for the Advancement of Haitian Professionals, we understand career development is important to you. That is why I have seized the opportunity to partner with NAAHP to share my talent as a certified Global Career Development Facilitator to provide you with career information and resources to assist you with your professional development.

You can look forward to more career content in future newsletters under “Career Conversations” and interactive webinars on various career topics throughout the year. Please email any suggestions on career related topics you would like to see covered to careers@naahpusa.org. In addition, I would like to invite you to visit the Career Coaching Page to learn more about me, NAAHP’s Career Coaching Program, and exclusive member discounts on career services.
