Betty M. Charles

Betty M. Charles is an associate with Florida Health Law Center. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in International Studies at the University of Miami in 2002. She subsequently earned her Juris Doctorate degree from Boston College Law School in 2005 and her Master of Public Health in Health Policy & Management from Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in 2014. In her current role, Ms. Charles negotiates and drafts various contractual agreements for healthcare providers and medical practice groups, including employment contracts, employee non-compete, shareholder agreements, partnership agreements and professional service management agreements. She also handles complex litigation matters.

Ms. Charles has extensive experience in representing physicians and physician practice groups, counseling them on all legal and regulatory aspects involved with the establishment and merger of medical practices. Ms. Charles also has experience with negotiating and drafting various contractual agreements for medical practice groups including software licensing agreements, vendor agreements, commercial real estate leases, and medical equipment leases. Prior to joining Florida Health Law Center, Ms. Charles managed her own law firm where she represented healthcare providers advising them on operational matters including medical staff issues, and compliance with Anti-Kickback Statute, Stark Law, Medicare/Medicaid regulations, False Claims Act, and HIPAA.

Outside of her representation of healthcare providers, Ms. Charles has also represented medical software companies, real estate companies, construction firms, independent bookstores, and individuals in various litigation matters including, breach of contract actions, debt defenses, foreclosure defense, defamation actions, bankruptcy cases, and probate matters.

Ms. Charles is fluent in English, French, and Creole and is conversant in Spanish.
