Toward a Common Vision for Success: Results-Driven Road Maps in Education

Title: Toward a Common Vision for Success: Results-Driven Road Maps in Education

Summary:

This workshop will focus on current reform efforts to strengthen the Haitian education system by “improving how students learn, what they learn and when they should start to learn” (more context from Jacqueline Charles’s recent article in the Miami Herald). There are many education initiatives taking place in and for Haiti, but lacking a coordinated approach with a shared outcome in mind. Without a collective understanding and agreement of the outcomes we seek for all children, the diaspora may be getting involved in ways that are potentially inefficient, ineffective, or harmful.

The workshop conversation will explore how results-driven road maps and contextualized vision for success can assist with successfully implementing the reforms. In particular, how are we leveraging the diverse resources and assets linking Haiti’s citizens and its diaspora to create effective, sustainable change? The workshop will begin with full group discussion, followed by breakout groups. Before the end of the workshop, each breakout group will be responsible for sharing what was discussed and at least one (1) commitment reached. The commitment can range from an action step for a subset of the group, one new connection made, or a research study proposal sparked by the group’s discussion.

After completing this session, the participant will be able to identify how results-driven road maps and a contextualized vision can transform the education sector’s approach to linking Haiti and its diaspora. The participant will be able to describe how specific resources (such as human capital, curriculum, technology, and language) play a role in developing results-driven road maps for the success of all students.

The workshop will explore the following questions:

  • What are the outcomes we seek in working together – in Haiti and within the diaspora – toward a model education system? Are we rooting our desired outcomes as part of a contextualized vision that takes into consideration what we want for all students, families, and for a stronger society in 5, 10, and 15+ years?
  • Which inputs and stakeholders are necessary to create a cohesive contextualized vision?
  • When establishing a results-driven road map, should primary, secondary, and higher education be evaluated individually – or the trajectory between the three?
  • With collective education outcomes more clearly defined, which resources can lay the groundwork for transformative partnership between Haiti and its diaspora?
  • Breakout groups to generate ideas about how a coordinated approach to a particular resource would help achieve the shared outcome. Resource categories may include:
    • Human capital – building leadership at the student, teacher, and community level: Investing in the human resources necessary to build and sustain model schools, districts, and a national system
    • Curriculum
    • Technology
    • Language
