November 12, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Announcing the Launch of SANIPAY by the USAID-Funded SANIFIN Project at the NAAHP Conference: A Collaborative Effort to Improve Sanitation in Haiti

Atlanta, Georgia: November 9, 2024 —The Financing Climate-Resilient Sanitation Systems and Services (SANIFIN) initiative, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), will officially launch SANIPAY—a mobile, one-stop sanitation platform—at the National Alliance for the Advancement of Haitian Professionals (NAAHP) Annual Conference held November 7 to 9, 2024.

USAID-SANIFIN brings together sanitation service providers, the National Directorate for Drinking water and Sanitation (DINEPA), State University of Haiti, financial institutions, and the Haitian Diaspora in a joint effort to accelerate access to improved sanitation services in Haiti.

At the heart of this project is SANIPAY, a digital sanitation services platform developed by HaitiPay, a leading Haitian fintech. SANIPAY enables the Diaspora to purchase sanitation services for families and communities in Haiti, while also ensuring transparency and accountability in service delivery. The Diaspora Consortium, comprising NAAHP, the Haitian Resource Alliance (HRA), and the EDEM Foundation, partners with USAID-SANIFIN to raise awareness and to mobilize private capital from the Diaspora to support sustainable sanitation services in Haiti.

The NAAHP conference will also feature a plenary and breakout session with a live demonstration of the SANIPAY  platform, giving attendees a firsthand look at how the platform engages the Diaspora to drive sustainable change. USAID/Haiti Mission Director Jennifer Link added, “at USAID, we prioritize sustainable, climate-resilient solutions that not only enhance sanitation services but also bolster the overall well-being of vulnerable communities. We believe that strengthening local systems across various sectors, such as water, sanitation, and finance, is key to building resilience and ensuring equitable access to essential services for all Haitians.”

The Role of the Diaspora in Transforming Sanitation Service in Haiti

The Haitian Diaspora is a key element in addressing the country’s sanitation challenges. Through SANIPAY, Diaspora members can contribute financially to ensure their families and communities have access to clean toilets, waste management, and hygiene products. This initiative highlights how collaborative efforts between Haitians abroad, local partners can contribute toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goal of universal access to sanitation in Haiti. “With tools like SANIPAY, developed by HaitiPay, the Diaspora can actively contribute to improving access to improved sanitation while we build a framework for long-term municipal ownership.” Patrick Lucien from NAAHP-EDEM-HRA coalition.
