NAAHP Condemns False Statements Targeting Haitian Community in Ohio
Hillside, New Jersey, September 22, 2024 — The National Alliance for the Advancement of Haitian Professionals (NAAHP) strongly condemns recent false and harmful statements made by certain American political figures, unfairly targeting the Haitian diaspora, particularly the growing Haitian community in Springfield, Ohio.
These baseless accusations not only perpetuate damaging stereotypes but also contribute to the spread of xenophobia, stoking division and fear. Even more troubling is the apparent use of these falsehoods to advance political agendas, doing so at the expense of a resilient and vibrant community that has long been an integral part of American society.
The Haitian community in Springfield, like many immigrant communities across the country, has demonstrated immense contributions to the economic growth, culture, and social fabric of the region. Haitian immigrants are entrepreneurs, healthcare workers, educators, and more—engaged citizens who actively shape the betterment of their neighborhoods. To suggest otherwise is to distort the truth and diminish the hard work and aspirations of countless individuals.
We at the NAAHP are deeply concerned about the damaging effects of these defamatory statements, not only on the perception of Haitian Americans but on the broader fabric of American society. Lies that vilify communities create an atmosphere of fear and mistrust, undermining the core values of unity, diversity, and mutual respect that the American democracy is built upon.
Today, we stand in full solidarity with our Haitian brothers and sisters in Ohio and across the nation. We call on all Americans, particularly leaders and public figures, to reject these divisive and harmful narratives. Instead, we urge a recommitment to values that strengthen the fabric of our nation: unity, truth, and respect for all people, regardless of their origin or background.
The NAAHP remains committed to advocating for the Haitian community and working toward a more inclusive and equitable society where all immigrant communities can thrive and contribute to the American dream.
