Dr. Sabrina Sumner

Division Chief of Hospital Medicine, Geisinger Health Services

Dr. Sabrina Sumner was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida and is a graduate of the University of Florida.  After being awarded a Health Professions Scholarship in 2005, she was commissioned as an officer in the US Air Force.  She obtained her medical degree at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine-Georgia Campus and went on to complete a residency in internal medicine at Keesler Air Force Base in coastal Mississippi.

While serving in the Air Force, Dr. Sumner had the privilege of treating wounded warriors in Germany and was able to serve as a flight surgeon for two years with a focus on occupational medicine.  Other interesting highlights included helping to devise an in-flight quarantine process for suspected Ebola cases during the 2014 outbreak in West Africa, serving as the primary physician for the Aeromedical Staging Facility at JB Andrews, a US entry point for wounded warrior air evacuation, and participated as the Chair of the Infection Control Function for the 779th Medical Group.

Dr. Sumner has 9 years’ experience in the field of internal medicine with special interest in hospital-based practice.  She is currently serving as Division Chief of Hospital Medicine for Geisinger Health Services in State College, Pennsylvania, where she resides with her husband and two young sons.  She is a member of the American College of Physicians, Board certified through the American Board of Internal Medicine and participating in ongoing Maintenance of Certification, and a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine.
