Ja’Neil “Doctah JGMH” Humphrey
Integrated Plastic Surgery Resident, University of Illinois at Chicago

Ja’Neil “Doctah JGMH” Humphrey is an artsy Jersey girl who chose to channel her creative energy into a career in plastic surgery as a naive, yet determined highschooler. A proud HBCU alumna, she was recently honored with the 40 Under 40 award from her alma mater, Oakwood University. She is a dual graduate of the Loma Linda University Schools of Religion—earning a Master of Arts in Bioethics—and the School of Medicine, where she completed her Doctor of Medicine.
Now in Chicago, she is living her blessed life as a first-year integrated plastic surgery resident at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her academic interests include mentorship, surgical ethics, medical illustration, and health literacy. She is also the author of an AAMC-recommended pre-med read, Doctahing It Up: A Guide for Navigating the Culture of Medicine in Your First Year of Medical School, now in its second edition.
Her greatest hope is that her story encourages others who have a non-traditional pathway to a competitive specialty in medicine to embrace their gifts and passions as their secret weapons for success—and to lift as they climb along the way.
