What is your mission?

The mission of the Center for the Arts, Port-au-Prince is to empower adolescent girls in the arts in Haiti and to create income-generating activities in the arts.

What makes your organization so unique in the non-profit space?

Our work is unique because it focuses on adolescent girls, the age at which so many things can and do go wrong for girls. Many NGO’s have programs that focus on women (age 18 to 30) and children (12 years old and under). This leaves a huge gap for girls ages 12-18, the time in their lives when they are most vulnerable. Girls in Haiti often get pregnant during this time. They can and often do drop out of school due to household responsibilities, including fetching water, going to the market, cooking, cleaning and more. They are prone to HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases due to a lack of education about sexual and reproductive health. Our work is through the arts, but our focus is widespread, in that we aim to empower and teach girls things that they do not learn in school and they do not learn from their parents at home. We are using a safe-space environment in which they feel protected and cared for by mentors and teachers that are working with them, to teach them life skills, artistic skills and equip them for their journeys in life.

What is your organization up to at the moment & how can Members of the National Association of Haitian Professionals (NAHP) be involved?

Our organization is just over 3 years strong. We are always looking for supporters who believe deeply in our work and who, through their financial donations, make it possible for us to continue our work and to make a difference in the lives of girls in Haiti.

Members of the National Alliance for the Advancement of Haitian Professionals (NAAHP) can follow us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/centerfortheartspap) and share our posts with other Haiti interested folks.

They can support us financially (https://www.fracturedatlas.org/site/fiscal/profile?id=6142) with every donation being tax-deductible and with every donation making a huge impact.

They can purchase our book Rising Up which is available on AMAZON. (http://amzn.com/9997041127)

They can come to Haiti and visit our program, meet our girls and become inspired by witnessing the strength and determination that resides in each and every one of our girls, who believe deeply in building a better life for themselves and their families.
